SpongeBob SquarePants in Buckaroo Banzai!?

Posted on 2010-09-072020-04-12 by herbcso

So I was watching Buckaroo Banzai again after first having seen it way back when in college in the ’90s and I’m sitting through the opening credits when the following frame catches my attention (grabbed from 2m37s into the movie as it plays on streaming Netflix right now):

Buckaroo Banzai SpongeBob small frame
A machine in Buckaroo Banzai that looks suspiciously like…

Wait! What was that? That looks like… nah, it can’t be! Or is it? Damn me to hell and back, that does look an awful lot like SpongeBob SquarePants – what’s he doing in “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension”!? Here’s a closer look:

SpongBob closeup
A closeup of SpongeBob – or is it?

Wow! Looks just like him, don’t you think?

SpongeBob SquarePants current
The modern-day SpongeBob, as we know and love him.

What can I say except: wow!

I noticed the same thing this morning, and Ive got one more link to add…the guy from Buckaroos band, Rawhide, played by the actor who also played the Kurgen in Highlander, the head guard in Shawshank, and the DI in Starship Troopers, is also the voice of Mr Crabs on Spongebob!!! No BS look it up. I really think that was Spongebob.

It is the same guy, you’re absolutely correct. I wonder whether Stephen Hillenburg was really involved with Buckaroo Banzai though. Especially since he only started developing the idea in 1996 and TABBA8D was already released in 1984.

But then, maybe they really DID have time travel… Hmm… ;]
